Why 12μm Thermal Sensors Matter for Compact Thermal Imaging Devices
2026-09-29 10:11:23

What Does 12μm Mean?

In thermal imaging specifications, pixel pitch refers to the distance between the centers of adjacent detector pixels. Several Ferolix products use a 12μm detector pitch.

The FX Series, for example, specifies a 12μm pitch across its 256×192, 384×288 and 640×512 detector configurations. The FS Series also uses a 12μm detector pitch.

Pixel pitch is an important engineering parameter because it influences detector dimensions and optical system design.

Pixel Pitch and Detector Size

If the number of pixels increases while pixel pitch remains constant, the physical detector area also changes. This relationship affects how optical systems are designed around the sensor.

For manufacturers developing compact thermal imaging products, the relationship between sensor dimensions, lens design and housing size is important.

The FX Series demonstrates one approach to compact product design. The device is specified at no more than 180mm × 75mm × 55mm and no more than 400g including the battery.

12μm and Lens Design

Thermal imaging performance depends on the relationship between detector and lens.

The lens projects infrared radiation onto the detector. Focal length, aperture and field of view therefore need to be considered together with detector pitch.

For this reason, a thermal imaging manufacturer cannot treat the detector as an independent component. The sensor and optical system form part of one imaging chain.

12μm in Different Thermal Platforms

12μm technology is not limited to compact monoculars in the Ferolix portfolio.

The FS Series uses a 12μm detector with 256×192, 384×288 and 640×512 configurations. The FP68-U and FP7-U also use 640×512 thermal detectors with a 12μm pitch.

The FP8-U multispectral binocular similarly uses a 640×512 uncooled VOX thermal detector with 12μm pixel pitch.

This shows how the same detector pitch can appear in different product architectures, from handheld products to integrated multispectral observation systems.

Why Buyers Should Not Look at Pixel Pitch Alone

Pixel pitch is important, but it should not be treated as a standalone measure of overall image quality.

Buyers should also review:

  • thermal detector resolution

  • NETD

  • Lens focal length

  • Lens aperture

  • Field of view

  • Image processing

  • Display resolution

  • Digital zoom

  • Environmental protection

For example, the FS Series specifies NETD ≤40mK at 25°C and F/1.0, together with 50Hz operation and multiple lens options.

B2B Product Development

For OEM and private-label programs, understanding pixel pitch helps buyers communicate technical requirements more effectively.

Instead of simply requesting a “high-resolution thermal camera,” a buyer can define a complete configuration including detector resolution, pixel pitch, lens focal length, display, battery, operating temperature and optional functions.

This allows the manufacturer and buyer to evaluate whether the proposed platform fits the intended market.

Conclusion

12μm thermal detector technology is an important part of several Ferolix thermal imaging platforms. It connects detector architecture with Optical Design and compact product engineering.

For B2B buyers, pixel pitch should be evaluated together with resolution, NETD, lens configuration and the complete system rather than used as an isolated specification.
