A basic thermal imaging device provides an image. More advanced systems can combine the image with geographic and directional information.
This integration is useful when an observation system needs to do more than display an infrared scene.
The Ferolix FP68-U, FP7-U and FP8-U incorporate positioning and orientation functions alongside thermal imaging.

The FP68-U supports BEIDOU, GPS and GLONASS positioning.
The product specification states a self-positioning accuracy of ≤±10m and target-positioning accuracy of ≤±20m.
It also provides digital compass functions with an azimuth accuracy of 0.5° RMS and pitch angle accuracy of 0.1° RMS.
The FP7-U combines thermal imaging, visible imaging, laser ranging, positioning and meteorological measurement.
Its positioning system supports BEIDOU, GPS and GLONASS.
The specified positioning accuracy is 5m CEP and 10m PE, while target positioning accuracy is listed at ≤20m at 1km.
The system also includes angle measurement and automatic magnetic declination correction.

The FP8-U provides GPS, BeiDou and GLONASS positioning.
Its specified self-positioning accuracy is 3m CEP, while target positioning accuracy is 20m horizontal CEP.
The system provides azimuth, pitch and roll measurement functions.
Knowing where an imaging device is located is only part of a positioning system. Direction and angle are also important when calculating the relative position of an observed target.
This is why advanced systems combine satellite positioning with digital compass and angle measurement.
Laser ranging adds another measurement dimension.
The FP8-U uses a 1535nm Laser Rangefinder and specifies a minimum range of 80m and long-range configurations depending on target conditions.
The FP68-U also integrates a 1535nm laser rangefinder.
Together, thermal imaging, ranging, positioning and orientation can create a more comprehensive observation system.
For product developers and distributors, these integrated functions can create a new product category beyond conventional thermal monoculars.
Instead of selling a thermal camera alone, a manufacturer can provide an observation platform with imaging, measurement and location capabilities.
The integration of thermal imaging with satellite positioning, digital compass and laser ranging represents an important development in electro-optical observation.
Ferolix FP68-U, FP7-U and FP8-U platforms demonstrate different approaches to combining these technologies in integrated systems.
